Kimberley Gordon is one half of the the sun-kissed blonde duo who started American clothing brand Wildfox in 2007. Today, working alongside musician Jimmy Sommers as CEO, Wildfox has amassed an army of followers under Kimberley's Creative Direction including celebrity fans of their standout cult pieces (remember the Wildfox Seeing Stars Lennon Sweater?) as worn by every A-lister from Taylor Swift to Jennifer Lopez.
Their much sought after collections are inspired each season by a different theme; from this year's pre-collection 'Angels off Duty' idea based on Charlie's Angels on vacation to the SS14 range devoted to beautiful beach looks with their Lagoon theme.
To celebrate the SS14 Wildfox collection launch we wanted to ask Kimberley how the idea for the Wildfox business came about, and what is next for the American brand...
DONNA IDA: How did you get started?
Kimberley Gordon: 'My BFF and I had this idea to make shirts that really FELT like vintage T-Shirts (which we wore every day and slept in haha) and it just sparked and we never looked back. It was like diving off a cliff where you didn't know if there was a bungee but we did it anyway! So happy we did.'
DONNA IDA: Where is your Head Office?
Kimberley Gordon: 'Silverlake, Los Angeles!'
DONNA IDA: What inspires you?
Kimberley Gordon: 'Pretty much everything, but I love films and directors and books, I love the rain (which never happens here) and I love my friendships!'
DONNA IDA: What is your business mantra?
Kimberley Gordon: 'When starting out it was; "Be the first to arrive and the last to leave." Now it's; "Let's have a sleepover and work with a movie marathon in the background" and also to never quit no matter how tough it feels."'
DONNA IDA: If you weren’t a designer what would you do?
Kimberley Gordon: 'I would direct films or design dolls.'
DONNA IDA: Describe your style highs and lows?
Kimberley Gordon: 'Lows - in high school I used to sew my own stuff, once I made a denim pair of, like, leg things that covered my shoes, I wore them so much. I also dressed like a hippie raver with JNCO jeans and scratch and sniff T-Shirts.
Highs - is every time I buy a nice pair of expensive shoes.'
DONNA IDA: What advice would you give to a younger you?
Kimberley Gordon: 'Sleeping in a car, really bad breakups and couch surfing is not the worst thing in the world, it's the most free you'll ever be. Enjoy the ride, it will make you who you become.'
DONNA IDA: What's next?
Kimberley Gordon: 'Stores, perfume, travel, love.'
