SS11 Trends - The Return of the Flare

annie hall

Let’s face it, the seventies are back in fashion and there’s no avoiding it. Marc Jacobs’ Spring 2011 show is proof enough- dominated as it was by orange hues, flowing silks, big sunglasses, wedges and wide legged trousers. If you’re not convinced, check out Tom Ford’s Spring Summer 2011 show here, where the catwalk was stalked by current supermodels alongside film, art and music stars, and seventies icons such as Lauren Hutton (check out the Citizens of Humanity Hutton high flare- named after her!)

Not ready to celebrate the return of the seventies by donning a ‘fro and turning on the Bee Gees? Neither! Celebrate the return of this glamorous era with flare… Flared jeans! Follow the lead of some of the coolest designers including Phoebie Philo for Celine, Derek Lam, Elie Tahari and our very own Stella McCartney by donning a wide leg or silhouette shifting kick flare. Here are some of Secret Squirrel’s best picks for what’s coming up and what’s here now at Donna Ida:

Mother Denim:

This sexy new denim brand has created some seriously hot flare styles, and our waiting list for them is already super long! Think Annie Hall in 2011, this brand is the next big thing in denim. Contact one of our stores now to get your name on the Mother list- new styles are due in store next month.

J Brand Exclusive:

The J Brand Babe has always been a favourite, and it is available now at Donna Ida in an exclusive super-soft Japanese black luxe twill.

Stella McCartney:

The Stella 70s Patch is here, and for those of you who are uber-fashion forward, this is the jean for you. Always one step ahead of the high street trends, Stella McCartney has nailed it with this season’s best flare yet. Pair it with the Stella old navy denim shirt for double-denim perfection.

MiH:

Our all time favourite flare the MiH Marrakesh is back for spring in a brand new wash ‘shaw’. This is a beautiful pale denim reminiscent of the stone wash of old with a gorgeous embroidered waistband to add a bit of extra 70s oomph to an already perfect jean. Get it now!

Wondering how to style your new found flare friends? Pair your flares with a tucked in Tucker print shirt to keep that 70s look, or tone them down with a plain tee from Kain. Another strong look for the season is the military shirt (think M*A*S*H’s Hot Lips Houlihan), and MiH have done a great range of button up military style shirts for the new season. Alternatively, go for a softer look with the new cream silk ruffle blouse from By Malene Birger, in stores now.
