Your Guide to Colour Blocking SS11

Colour blocking is the ‘in’ thing for Spring/Summer 2011. Ask any member of the fash pack and they are sure to rant and rave about mixing blood reds with zesty oranges or the cooling clash of navy vs. aqua. Starting with an injection of electric blue onto the scene, designers from Jil Sander to Diane Von Furstenberg embraced the colour trend in Spring/Summer 2011 and the catwalks were bursting with blocked brights.

When it comes to perfecting a look such as colour blocking, no one wants to look like they have been thrown up on by a rainbow. Head to toe colour may be ideal for the brave, but trying the trend out with pastel shades is the perfect start. Cameron Diaz and Whitney Port take on the look by wearing skinny jeans in blushed nude tones, whilst Fearne Cotton tackles the trend with a dusty pink top and lemon yellow chinos. To get the look try a J Brand 811 in Pale Rose or the J Brand Inez in sun faded grapefruit.

The effortlessly stylish Alexa Chung and Rachel Bilson opt for a darker shade of denim. Their wine coloured skinny jeans are both teamed with black blazers for that classic model off duty look with a hint of sophistication. Try the J Brand 811 in Shanghai red for instant colour cool points.

For maximum impact keep your colours bright. Trend conscious Sarah Jessica Parker and Rihanna do colour blocking justice by matching sharp fluoro colours like vivid fuchsia and reds with lighter pinks and oranges for a harmonious look. Try Current/Elliot the Roller in Lady Bug red and a Fresh Laundry Basic Crew in Magenta to get the colour wheel rolling.

If you’re not a fan of warmer colours you can always go with complimentary cooler tones. Celebrities on our coloured jean radar tend to opt for supporting shades of black and white. Kim Kardashian and Elisha Cuthbert play it safe with bright shades of blue with black jackets. Where as Victoria Justice and Hilary Duff get summer ready by opting for white on top. Get mediterranean blue with the J Brand 811.

If you want to mix it up try a royal purple J Brand 811 with an eye grabbing orange. Or lighter turquoise shades with a lemon yellow and light pink combination. Match with contrasting accessories for maximum attention.

To keep it complimentary, stick to colour families. Mix lemon yellows and lime greens. Pastel pinks and reds, and electric blues and turquoise. For a subtle sophistication add a nude shoe to the J Brand Inez to complete the colour blocked look.
