The Slogan Tee

The slogan tee is taking the fashion world by storm for SS14. Whether you're dressing them up or down, wearing a slogan tee can be playfully fun, convey a witty sense of irony or just gain serious style points. The slogan tee is the first stop to creating that perfect daring fashion statement, pushing style boundaries and exploring controversial statements with an attention grabbing tee. These tees are a hot topic this year with everyone from supermodel Cara Delevingne wearing 'I Ain't No Wifey' to actress Ashley Tisdale wearing a tongue-in-cheek 'Celfie' number earlier this year. This season we've seen eye-catching pieces from Simeon Farrar, Black Score, Wildfox, Markus Lupfer, Serge Denimes, Zoe Karssen an Simon Farrar for IDA.

History of the Slogan Tee

The slogan tee has humble fashion beginnings, starting out innocently in the 1950s with companies in the USA decorating their tees with resort names and characters including the legendery Walt Disney icon, Mickey Mouse. These hit the UK, being sold on the Kings Road in Chelsea in a shop owned by Tommy Roberts and Trevor Myles.

Decorative tees took on a turn into the subversive in the 1960s and 1970s as a way to express political views and hit the high fashion scene in the 1960s when Vivienne Westwood added a punk inspired tee with the words 'Destroy' into her collection spawning a whole host of controversial immitations. Slogan tees are woven into our modern fashion history; from Katherine Hamnett famously shaking hands with Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher whilst wearing a politically defiant, oversize tee emblazoned with '58% Don't Want Perishing' tee to Wham's monochrome 'Choose Life' tees typifying 80s culture.

Today's tees burst back onto the fashion scene in 2006 when UK designer Henry Holland created witty bespoke tees for London Fashion Week with his 'Do Me Daily Chris Bailey' and 'Get You Freak On Giles Deacon' which catapulted him to an international stage and sparked the high street to copy this look. For SS14 slogan tees are combining carefree chic with youthful playfulness, the statement tees are worn to express individualism from the cheeky view of scandalous subjects or the humorous jokes on modern icons, these items are definitely prominent in the style stakes. Slogan tees have evolved into luxury, contemporary pieces with embellished slogans now being added to soft jersey knits and separates featuring on the catwalks of London Fashion Week.
